It is a problem that every homeowner deals with from time to time. Hair building up in your drains, and either partially or completely blocking the water from draining properly in your home. And that is to be expected. Between shaving, trimming hairs, and everything in-between hair does get in the drain. But it does beg the question, can I avoid hair clogs? The answer is yes, there are things that you can do to avoid having to deal with those annoying drawing clogs.

Steps to Avoid Hair Clogs in Drains

Install Drain Covers

Drain covers can be purchased at hardware or home goods stores and are easy to install. Whether placed over the top of the drain or underneath the drain, these screens help to collect hair and avoid any clogs in the future.

Be Proactive

Sometimes the best defense is an offense. To avoid hair clogs, be proactive and keep hair away from sinks and showers. You can start by brushing away the hair. Before heading into the shower, take a minute to brush your hair. This will remove any loose strands of hair so that none will fall into the shower floor and into the drain.

You can also keep an eye out while showering. If you see any loose hairs on the surface of your tub or shower floor, place them in a pile away from the drain so you can throw it away once your shower is over.

How to Clean Your Drain

You can’t avoid your drain from being clogged all the time. So from time to time, you will have to clean your drains. Here are three things you can do:

Do a homemade rinse

Once a month, pour one cup of baking soda directly into the drain you wish to clear. Afterward, pour one cup of vinegar directly into the drain. This will cause the baking soda to bubble, so don’t be alarmed! Once you have done that pour one or more cups of boiling water into the drain to clear any broken up debris.

Use Your Hands

If you have installed a drain screen, it is important to clean them out once a week or so. Put on some gloves, and reach into it with your hands!
